When does an engine swap cross the line?

A Porsche with a Ford Coyote V8, a classic Mustang with a LS, a freakin Pantera with a LS, a E-type with Toyota 1JZ.... When is it too much? Lets start with that Porsche/Ford combo.

Is it OK if the original engine has been destroyed? I think that might factor into it. After hearing the story behind the car, I don’t hate it.

What about Jag with a Toyota?

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

On this one, the body was rotten. Engine was just laying around. I don’t mind this either.

Does the vehicle have to be almost destroyed for it to be OK?

Now lets get to the WTF, Pantera with an LS

I don’t get it. Money wasn’t a factor here. It was just a poor decision (in my eyes). They could have put a Coyote in there. Why the Ringbrothers keep putting Chevy power in Ford products is beyond me. You want more?

I give you (Can’t believe I’m saying this) a 1965 Mustang, with a LS...

Where do you think the line should be?

I believe the line is in the wallet. If the only way you can enjoy your dream car is by shoving the cheapest, closest engine into it. Do it. Enjoy it.

But, if you’re having your dream car built by professionals for an insane amount of money....

Be loyal to the Fucking brand.

That’s all I’m saying

If you can afford to put a LS in a Miata... You should stick a damn wankel in there, and tune the shit out of it.

I will always say: it’s your car, and as long as you’re not hurting anyone or are building a genuinely dangerous car, go nuts. The Abomination Mustang (first gen coupe with a 2jz) is one of my favourite project cars of all time.

If done in the name of reliability an engine swap is acceptable. As wonderful as a V12 is , it’s not a good engine to have to own. Small block Chevy swapped XJ12s and XJSs are all over the place and I’d buy one in a heartbeat because it’s probably better than it originally was.

After a quick search for abomination mustang, That’s bad ass! Does the engine need to come from a different country than the car? Does that make it OK? You just don’t Coyote a Chevy, or LS a Ford. In my opinion

I think the line is crossed when the replacement engine either has worse performance or signficiantly worse reliability. Everything else is A-OK.

I agree with this. But it goes back to the line being in the wallet. & I’d drive a Chevy powered XJ any day

I will never understand brand loyalty when it comes to cars. What the hell have Ford, GM, Kia or Daihatsu ever done to prove any loyalty to me? Why should I be loyal to a massive corporation who looooong ago made their profits off my car?

In my opinion, I don’t really care. Do whatever and put your all into it. Country of origin for parts doesn’t matter. Putting a 2.3 Ecoboost into a GTO? Sure. Slant six into an old Cougar? Don’t care.

I don’t care if it’s for the sake of making a car run(any car). But, the mustang bothers me.

Cayman with Coyote is 200% better than the original

What about the ToyoHog?

A bored out 1980s Harley motor is going to be far worse reliability than a Toyota 1NZ-FXE. And, it’s probably going to be less than the 110 system horsepower of that Toyota engine and the P112 transmission.

I’m thinking it’s more rarity than value .

Taking a rare car and doing something sacrilegious to it like a cross-brand engine swap is bad because it’s decirculating that rare car, arguably. Similarly, taking a rare engine and using it in a non-original application is decirculating that engine for the sake of keeping its original application going.

It also helps, though, if you have the rare car, and no engine - resurrecting it with the wrong engine is better than letting it rot.

Swapping something relatively common into something else relatively common? Eh, do what you want.

And, ultimately, if it’s your car? Do what you want, it’s just tasteless to do engine swaps that violate the above rules.

One of my assorted dream cars is a Miata with the Wankel out of an RX-7. Rev that shit out to a billion RPM, do sick burnouts, corner like a rabbit on meth. Heaven.

I don’t think there is a line.

Even when engines that are swapped into a car completely overwhelm its original characteristic - the car can get a pass if its hilarious.

The only test for evaluating a swap is whether the swap achieved what the user intended to achieve and if it is in good taste.

Because taste is subjective, we keep having this conversation/discussion/argument/inquisition/trolling every time.

I completely agree with you. Nothing is more disappointing than seeing old Ford hot rods with SBC engine. Flat heads are awesome, or old mopars with SBC engines. Get something cool like a max wedge or an early hemi.

Do what’s you want if you can afford it. The line I’d say is where the project stops and never gets done.

Telling someone that they can’t put an engine into a car because the brands don’t match is childish. The Ring Brothers aren’t hurting anyone by sticking SBCs in Fords (or non-Fords that borrowed their engines).

That said, if I were the customer who paid to have that Coyote put in the back of that Cayman, I would be very disappointed with the quality of the swap. The hatch that doesn’t close just screams half-assed.

And as much as I like the sound of a V8, that 5.0 will never sound as good as the original H6.

To be fair, the Evolution V-twin is actually a damn good little engine, and can be tuned to around 100 hp easily and reliably. It’s probably not going to last as long as the Toyota engine, but it’ll run a long time.

For me, there is no line. Put whatever into whatever and I’ll find it interesting. I get why an LS in a mustang would irk a lot if people but it doesn’t bug me. No one seems to have a problem with all the camaro’s running around with Ford 9 inches in them.

I don’t know if this helps at all but the owner of the Mustang was from Russia. His mechanic was much more comfortable working on LSx engines than Ford engines. I assume due to pushrod design over the DOHC design.
